Discovered within a Cornwall barn during the late 1970s, this piece was covered in a thick layer of dirt and grime and almost unrecognisable for the beautiful item it is.

Joan of Arc was born in Domrémy, France around 1412. She transformed the course of the Hundred Years' War after claiming that divine voices instructed her to expel the English and see the French crown prince, Charles VII, rightfully crowned.

Driven by this mystical mission, the teenager gained the trust of the prince and, despite having no formal military training, famously rallied demoralised French forces to lift the brutal Siege of Orléans in 1429 in just nine days.

This miraculous victory cleared the path for Charles VII's official coronation in Reims, but Joan's meteoric rise ended abruptly in 1430 when she was captured by Burgundian allies of the English, she was executed by being burned at the stake on 30 May 1431 at just 19 years old; however, a retrial 25 years later completely cleared her name, culminating in her canonisation as a patron saint of France in 1920.
